Recent research
Today's children are at a greater risk of developing eczema because of the increasing use of soaps, bath and shower gels, according to Dr Michael Cork, a consultant dermatologist at Sheffield University.

The huge rise in soap product sales has triggered a six-fold increase in the number of children with eczema. Since the 1950's, when the number of children affected by eczema was a mere 3% the percentage of children now affected has jumped to more than 20%. Sales in Britain of products such as soap, shower gel, bubble bath and shampoo have leapt from £76 million in 1981 to a staggering £453 million in 2001.
Dr Cork said: "We have been using more and more products that break down the skin barrier. Soap and detergents just strip out the fats in between the skin cells." Dr Cork urges parents to cut down on soapy detergents and alcohol-filled baby wipes and to switch to moisturising, toxin-free ways to wash.
